Happy Howlidays!

When it came time to design a holiday card I asked my friend Zoe Fortier of Lopsided Ink to design something for me based around my dogs. I didn't give her much to go on besides, make it kinda cute. What she came up with surpassed my expectations! It is not only cute but funny, perfect for my family!
She captured both of my dogs personalities perfectly! Zoe has a real gift for art that captures whimsey and fun moments in life! Her carefree designs are almost irresistible with all the cute animals!
The good news if you are still looking for a holiday card Zoe has several choices in her Etsy shop, all of which are handmade on an old Vandercook press! These bunnies are one of my favorites:

Grab a set of these today on Etsy!

If you have already sent your holiday cards thats ok too because Zoe has the most adorable thank you card I have ever seen, perfect for after the holidays to send out to friends and family!

Custom Dog Urns- Poppy

Poppy was Sarah's first dog as an adult and her husbands first dog ever! They found her at the pound in Virginia Beach, at the end of a long dark row of cement kennels. She was just sitting in her kennel shaking, Sarah remembers how she didn't even make a sound! Sarah and her husband filled out an "adopt me" card but they were sixth on the list of potential adopters and promptly forgot. A week later Sarah got the call to come get Poppy! After a frantic trip to the pet store they picked her up immediately. It was Easter weekend and Sarah's inlaws were visitng, she and her husband came home with their first dog, their first beagle and not a clue what she needed! Poppy slept for three days, she didn't want to eat only sleep. Later that week Sarah cooked a frozen pizza and left it on the coffee table. When she returned to ask her husband where the pizza was, in typical beagle fashion Poppy had followed her nose and gotten the whole pizza, they found her stuffing inhaling the whole thing!

Once they got Poppy cleaned up and gave her a bath they realized at least two inches of her tail was broken, bent at a 90 degree angle. They will never know what happened, but hope she was born that way, not that someone broke it. Poppy was clearly someones pet as she was house trained and had manners. At first Sarah felt guilty thinking they had taken someones pet away but over time she realized she had ended up at the pound and Sarah's life for a reason.

Later Sarah and her husband adopted a second dog a beagle/Jack Russell Mix. At first Poppy acted like she was way to cool for the other dog but soon they found them curled up together, the best of friends! Poppy was a beagle and loved to run and escape. She escaped from the dog park once and tried to hitch a ride with someone in their truck, another time Sarah and her husband ran 10 miles chasing her!

Poppy passed away 5 years and 3 months after she came to live with Sarah and her husband. It was a silly injury that in the end tool her life. She ripped off her toenail and was unable to keep herself from chewing on her injured paw, making it so bad she was eventually in misery and had caused the infection to spread. With the support of the vet Sarah made the decision that was best for Poppy but hardest for her.

Poppy was a happy dog, she lived a good life full of all the things a beagle loves bones, naps, bones, snuggling under the covers and more bones. She brought love and light to Sarah and her husband for many years.  Poppy inspired Sarah to volunteer with Beagles of New England States, fostering and eventually adopting another dog. Poppy's legacy of love lives on through all the dogs Sarah continues to help.

Lazy Cat

Monday's are a great day to be a cat, lazing in the sun, covered in catnip, not a care in the world!

Wait isn't that every day in the life of a cat?

Custom Small Animal Urns

People often think I only make dog urns, not true! I can make an urn for any pet you have lost. That includes cats, rabbits, birds, chinchillas or ferrets. Any furry friend you wish to make the perfect memorial for! As  a former owner of a rabbit and ferrets I know that though these furry friends may be smaller in size, they are often larger in personality and we love them just as much!

Custom Dog Urns- Tyson

Every pet owner knows how much pets touch our hearts, they know when you say a dog is your son you mean it. Tyson's mom and dad Chris and Christy both had beautiful things to share about their furry son. Christy shared her thoughts with me here:

I am sure all pet owners think their pet is the best pet in the world, so I can only tell you why he's the best pet in the world to us. His name is Tyson. He was an 11 year old boxer, who passed 5/16/13. He was so much more than a pet, he was our son. He was a beautiful brindle boxer. Tyson was very laid back and was a true hippie at heart. He had a "no worries man" attitude. He never let anything bother him. He was a tree hugger for sure. No really, he loved to hug trees, literally. He was the kindest soul.  Even if you weren't a "dog" person, Tyson had a way of getting to you.
He is famous! He is an Alpo dog. If you visit alporealdogs.com, you will find his picture and his story (he's the one standing in the water, licking his chops). He is loved very much and will forever be missed by his mommy & daddy.

Chris's Tyson's dad shared with me what he wrote the morning after Tyson passed away, have a tissue handy:
The Last Hike
I woke up this morning and you did not greet me. I walked to the living room to see you, and you were not there. Missing from your favorite chair, I searched the whole house but I couldn't find you and started to believe a bad dream that I said to be not true just might. Last night I dreamt that we went on a beautiful hike, warm sun & the water just right. Ahead a trail sign read, "this trail continues, no humans allowed". You looked up at me, I didn't understand but unselfishly said go ahead. As my heart grew too heavy to hold, my legs & arms light and unsteady, feeling dizzy I lied to myself saying I was ready. I watched you walk ahead til' I couldn't see you no more. My heart broken seeing you so old. And as you disappeared into the forest of trees, I asked God to take of you please.

Custom Dog Urns- Teddy and Maya

Teddy and Maya's mom Farida was kind enough to share their story with me, theirs is a story not only about a lifetime of love but about a lifetime of friendship. Here is their story in Farida's own words.

In December 1997, we decided to adopt a dog and agreed to go to our local Humane Society and let a dog choose us.  When we arrived at the last row, SHE saw us and must have seen the big, neon, flashing “Suckers” sign on our foreheads.  She charmed us in 2 seconds flat.  Her name was Sweety, she was an about 2 year old lab mix and she was found malnourished on the streets.  The rest was history; we changed her name to Maya (nicknames: Snugglebunny, Queen) and put some weight back on her.  She didn’t know what cuddling and affection was but she figured it out very quickly and made up for lost time.

Fast forward to Christmas time 1999, a friend called and asked for my help to find a home for a dog who was returned to Animal Services on Christmas, they were given a week to find a new home.  After exhausting all avenues, I had him brought to my home to introduce to Maya, after working hard on convincing my husband.

They met on January 8, 2000 and were in love the moment they set eyes on each other.  They romped around until exhausted and we knew he found his home.  Though we wanted to change his name, which was Teddy, we realized it suited him to a T, no pun intended (nicknames: Mama’s boy, Snooggybooggy).

They were like twins, they both loved all kinds of foods (the most drool worthy foods were bananas, cantaloupe and Clementines), only toys that could be destroyed or eaten, loved, loved, loved fireworks and lightning storms (we live in Florida and have some major lightning).

Sadly, Maya passed away suddenly of severe Laryngeal Paralysis, after a day of trying to save her, the vet told us that nothing else can be done for her.  We took Teddy with us when we had her euthanized so he would know that she won’t be coming home, it was the first night they were ever separated.  She passed the day before her birthday (we celebrated their adoption days as their birthdays) on December 15, 2008 at age 13.

After some major and some minor health issues over the last couple of years, he came to the fork in the road.  We did not want to put him through any more discomfort; he was 14 and had become an old man who had been deeply loved since he came to us.  We were lucky enough to have a vet come to our house and he went very peacefully and with the dignity he deserved.

Our hearts are broken and we will miss both of them forever.

Custom Dog Urns- Sara and Murphy

Melody's husband is in the Air Force, so they have moved around a lot, luckily in those travels they were able to adopt both Sara and Murphy. Being from a high kill shelter in Georgia the dogs were fortunate as well. Initially looking for a lab Melody and her husband went to meet Murphy but fell in love with Sara instead. Unable to stay away they went back the next day and got Murphy to "foster". After two failed adoptions Melody knew Murphy had found his forever home with her too! While their furry family continues to grow, Murphy and Sara always had a special place. Both lived long and full lives with Melody and her husband. They had Alaskan adventures, plane rides and most importantly a wonderful family to love and care for them!

I Love It When My Dog....

Lets play ball mom!

I love it when my dogs force me to enjoy the sunshine! It's so easy to get caught up in the daily grind that I forget spring is happening and the sun is shining!

Sookie never missed a chance for a little sunshine and a snack!
Yesterday my dogs followed me outside to feed the birds. As I was packing up to go inside I spotted Shippo snoozing in a sunbeam. He gave me the lazy tail wag and a look that said come over here and pet my warm belly! He and I sat for about 15 minutes before Maxi brought me a ball to throw. After dozing in the sun and playing ball for about 40 minutes we all went inside. I felt more invigorated to do my work and refreshed from a break. I love it when my pooches remind me to enjoy the small things in life! What do your dogs help you enjoy?

Custom Pet Urns- Howling Dogs

Every urn I make, like every pet, is special! No two are made the same and each is 100% custom. I always enjoy hearing about the pets I make urns for and trying incorporate pieces of what the owners tell me into the urn.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of making an urn with a howling dog for a very special pooch named Walter! It's no secret that I love beagles and I love howlers! I was thrilled when Walters mom told me about how beautiful his voice was and how much she wanted him posed howling! I know it seems strange to be excited to make an urn but I was, Walter was a lovely dog to talk about and to sculpt.

People often remark to me how sad it must be to make urns all day and talk to people who have just lost a beloved member of their family. And it is sad, but it is also joyful. Joyful because I hear not about how the pet died, but how they lived and how much they were loved. I get take all of those wonderful things and turn them into art. So of course there is sadness, but mostly I feel honored to make something that will help ease the pain of saying goodbye to a furry friend.

I am happy to report Walter's mom loved his urn as much as I loved making it!

Custom Dog Urns- Special Treats

Recently I made an urn for Hayes and Eleanor, after receiving it their mom contacted me about making some tiny cheeseburgers to go in the urn. Every pay day she would get them double cheeseburgers and wanted them to have a forever snack. I thought that was so sweet and I think the cheeseburgers turned out really cute! What special treats or items make you think of your pet?

Saying Goodbye

There are many ways to say goodbye and honor a pet you have lost. When my beagle Sookie, died I was so saddened by her loss I was unable to make an urn for her, it was just too hard to sit and look and pictures and think of how she was gone.

After hanging onto her ashes for nearly a year I decided to plant a tree in her memory since she loved to be outside. Looking at her tree everyday as it watches over my house allows me to think of her and smile. Today it blossomed for the first time! It filled me with such happiness to see all the beautiful flowers that were all a little part of her! I plan this summer to make a memorial stone to go under the tree for her. Eventually when I am ready I will make her a small urn as well, but in the meantime I can enjoy springtime flowers and think of her. What things have you done that have helped you say goodbye to a pet you have lost?
